2024 Tidy Towns Biodiversity Conservation Winner
The winners of the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2024 Tidy Towns Awards were announced on 2 November 2024 and Queanbeyan Landcare was thrilled to win the Biodiversity Conservation Award (Category E).
This award is presented for “projects which regenerate, conserve, or advance scientific understanding of biodiversity in terrestrial and marine ecosystems”.

Wandiyali~Environa Conservation Area
The Wandiyali Restoration Trust ensures the long term protection of the natural environment at this site which sits next to Jerrabomberra and near to the township of Googong. Queanbeyan Landcare’s interest in preserving, restoring and enhancing the biodiversity of this quality patch of habitat began in late 2023.

Bicentennial Park
Queanbeyan Landcare has been involved with caring for Bicentennial Park since 1995. The current friends group, which emerged in 2014, has a strong commitment to letting natural plant regeneration take place at the park.

Fernleigh Park
The local Fernleigh Park Landcare group was established in 2002 with the aim of undertaking extensive planting programs along Jerrabomberra Creek and the streets that stretch throughout the Park to create a corridor of connected vegetation. Weeding, spraying, watering and fencing are regularly undertaken to ensure the ongoing success of the plantings.

Mt Jerrabomberra & Stringy Bark Ridge
Community groups have been involved with the care and management of Mount Jerrabomberra since the 2004 Plan of Management was released. They have conducted small and large group plantings, weeding and maintenance of the trails. Members have also led informative walks.

Friends of Queanbeyan River
This Friends group is working at three sites along the river. We are supporting Council’s efforts to restore and rehabilitate this riparian corridor in line with the recent Plan of Management. This wonderful green space supports an important Platypus population as well as many native bird species.

2021 and 2019 Survey of Aprasia parapulchella
The 1.8 hectare Fairlane Fauna and Flora Reserve on River Drive, Fairlane was identified as a habitat for the Pink-tailed Legless Lizard (Aprasia parapulchella). A grant secured in 1995 by Queanbeyan Landcare enabled a Plan of Management to be developed that would protect the population of this threatened reptile.

Gang-gang Cockatoo
Queanbeyan Landcare has previously supported actions that sustain and preserve the habitat of our local native birds. With Gang-gang Cockatoos now listed as a Threatened species Queanbeyan Landcare will be focusing on measures that support this beautiful bird in our region.
